ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR STYLES OF MARTIAL ARTS IN CHINA.
One of the most popular styles of martial arts in China is Ba Gua Zhang (Eight Diagram Palm). There are several names for Ba Gua and
they are as follow: Youshen (Roving Eight Diagrams), Longxing (Dragon Shaped Eight Diagrams), Xing Yi Ba Gua ( Eight Diagram Boxing)
and Yin Yang Ba Gua Zhang ( Yin Yang Eight Diagram Palm).
Ba Gua Zhang is based on the Chinese philosophy of the Eight Combinations of the three full and broken lines used in Divination.
WHY STUDY BA GUA? WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS?
Practicing Ba Gua will increase your agility and dexterity. You can practice by yourself, or you can spar (Sanda – free sparring) or
fight with weapons (Ba Gua sword sabre, cudgel, 7 stars decorated shaft). The movements imitate a dragon moving amidst clouds.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The movements are according to the Eight Diagrams and are Eight basic palm plays. From the original Eight, the basic palm will
derive 64 palm moves. The footsteps are changing continuously and the palm tricks and body movements follow one after
another. The movements look like overlapping circles, and the body will turn around from the waist during practice (walking, roving,
turning and falling). The movement between the upper body and the lower part are in contrast: while upper side protrudes, the
lower side squats for balance. Similarly for the arms and feet. The moves are similar to the animal styles: roaming like a dragon,
squatting like a tiger, looking out like a monkey and moving in a circle like an eagle.
The ideal place for practice is in nature. Learn to relax your body and mind. Wear light clothing and comfortable exercise shoes.
Always follow the instructions of the masters as closely as possible. Last but not least: Ba Gua is a lot of fun!
