The basics of the Chinese Traditional Medicine theories are the Yin & Yang (阴阳) Principles and the 5 Element Phases (五行).
The Yin & Yang theory is an ancient philosophical theory which explains the law of motion and change. It can be extrapolated to everything in the Universe. The human body is considered as a holistic organism of unity and opposites.
|Organs & Tissues in the Human Body||Position in the Human Body|
|YIN||5 Zhang organs, Meridians, Blood, Tendons, bones||Lower body, Interior side, Abdomen, Inner side of limbs|
|YANG||6 Fu bowels, Collaterals, Qi, Skin, Hair||Upper body, Exterior side, Back,
Outer side of limbs
The 5 Zhang (胀) Organs are: Heart, Lung, Spleen, Liver and Kidney. The function of these organs is: transformation, generation and storage of the essential substances such Qi, blood and Fluids. The 6 Fu (腹) organs are: Stomach, Gallbladder, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Bladder and San Jiao. The function of these organs is to pass and transform substances.
The illness in the body appears due to imbalances between Yin & Yang of the human body parts. The principles for restoring the health, is to regulate and restore the balance between Yin & Yang.
The 5 Elements Phases or the 5 Elements Theory refers to the cycle between categories of quality and relationship for the 5 phases: WOOD (木), FIRE (火), EARTH (土), METAL (金) and WATER (水). These phases are in constant motion and they are considered to build the Universe.
