Training Plan

Sitting Meditation practicing is beneficial to purify the mind and create inward reflection. We offer proper guidance on proper posture and meditation techniques, breathing control, mindfulness of the breath.

Beginners and advanced students will have an induction day where we will discuss the Initial Meditation Instructions and How to prepare for the practice. Also you will discuss the stage you are during your meditation path. It is advisable to attend the Sitting Meditation class during your time with us. Consistent practice of Chan Meditation helps to gain concentration and awareness. It also prepares the mind for  awakening and enlightenment.

Polite Notice: As part of the regular Curriculum in the Timetable we offer only Sitting Meditation. If you wish to attend the other Meditation styles mentioned above, please ask for the fee and book it in advance.

If you wish to have the Initial Meditation Instructions, How to prepare for the practice and Stages of Meditation on paper format, make sure you order a copy in advance. The cost of the booklet is 200 RMB.

Meditation practice follows the steps below:

1. Posture
2. Intention of Meditation
3. Breathing Techniques
4. Relaxation
5. Length of practice

The correct posture will be discussed with the Monk which will do the Sitting Meditation class. However, you can either stand in the Lotus Posture or Half – Lotus, depending on your preference and medical issues. If you feel uncomfortable in your meditation position you can change it.

Beginners are encouraged to practice Natural Breathing while more advanced students will learn to practice abdominal breathing. While meditating, a novice should keep the attention centered on the sensation of breathing at the nose for as long as possible. On the other hand, a more advanced student should focus on the abdominal area. Because distractions may occur during meditation, try avoiding them by changing your focus on your breath. With experience you will notice that there will be fewer distractions and the meditation position become more comfortable. One of the biggest challenge will be to quiet down your mind. Do not stress if you will not be able to achieve a peaceful state straight away. With patience and discipline you will reach your goal.

Shikantze (Emptiness Meditation) is an advanced meditation technique. While practicing this technique you must reach a state of Quiet Mindfulness. Your brain will detach of anything around you.

• Calmness, stability and clarity

In Maytreia Temple (Mile Da Fo 弥勒大佛寺), students can attend the Chanting Meditation on daily basis together with the monks of the Temple. They can listen to the Buddhist Ceremony which starts at 5.30 am. The Buddhist Ceremony is kept twice daily. This is due to the fact that the Academy is the only school allowed to have the quarters inside the Temple, therefore the students are active part of the Temple’s life.

In Shaolin Temple (少林寺) students will be able to attend the Buddhist Ceremony once per their stay in the Academy. There is not Chanting Meditation in the Shaolin Temple location.

Walking meditation uses as focus the actual walk. You should be more aware of the environment as well as the natural experience (sun, rain, wind, water) – this become part of the overall experience.

The main difference between sitting meditation and the walking one is the fact that in sitting meditation the main focus is on the inside world.

This type of mediation is very beneficial for students which have back pain or medical problems which do not allow them to sit for too long. You can practice the walking meditation indoors or outdoors.

There are four levels of experience for the walking meditation:

• Physical sensations
• Feelings
• Mental and emotional states
• Objects of consciousness
