Approaching Chinese New Year, Shaolin Temple Yunnan kept a health and safety fire drill. Fire is a real danger to historical and heritage temples and it is imperative for people who live inside to be trained and familiar with the procedures in case of emergency. The drill take place every year.
Several students were dressed as fire fighters and learned how to use the fire extinguishers. They also learned to read the labels on the extinguishers and to understand the purpose of each one.
At the event participated the monks, lay Buddhists, masters and foreign disciples. The health and safety drill was conducted by the Venerable Abbot of the Temple, Grandmaster Shifu Shi Yanbei.
Monks and students helped to extinguish the fire. To be prepared and understand how to put out a fire it is important when you live inside a 1200 years old Heritage Temple. The drill prepare the students and monks to respond quickly, calmly and safely. All the buildings of the Temple are equipped with fire alarms, fire extinguishers and fire hoses connected to the water supply. The drill is mandatory for every occupant of the Temple.
After the fire drill, in the courtyard of the Shaolin Temple Yunnan main building, Grandmaster Shifu Shi Yanbei taught students several techniques for self defense in case students and monks will require during the Chinese New Year. Daniel (Australia), Telo (Denmark) and Isabelle (Canada) volunteer to learn the Qin Na techniques against aggressors. Apart of the self defense techniques, the Abbot also explained the use of several devices used by the police forces.
Students felt very grateful to the Venerable Abbot for explaining the drill and self defense techniques which they found very useful. For the next days we are all prepared for the biggest event in China. For many students this will be an opportunity of a lifetime – to spend the Chinese New Year celebrations as part of the big family of Shaolin Temple in Yunnan.
